Ideal Weight Calculator
Enter your height and sex to see your ideal weight.
Ideal body weight formulas give a reference weight for a given height that was historically used in medicine and insurance. This tool computes both the Devine and the Robinson versions side by side. Enter height in centimetres or inches and select sex. The math runs entirely in your browser.
How to use
- Enter your height.
- Choose centimetres or inches.
- Select male or female.
- Compare the two resulting ideal weights in kilograms.
Examples
- Male, 180 cm (about 70.9 inches) produces Devine around 75.0 kg and Robinson around 72.6 kg.
- Female, 165 cm yields Devine about 56.9 kg and Robinson about 57.4 kg.
- Heights below 5 feet (60 inches) extrapolate downward with the same linear slopes.
FAQs
- What is the difference between Devine and Robinson?
- Devine uses a base of 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women at 60 inches plus 2.3 kg per inch above that. Robinson uses 52 kg / 49 kg bases and gentler slopes of 1.9 kg and 1.7 kg per inch. Both are simple linear models.
- Why are there two numbers?
- Different formulas were developed from different populations and purposes. Showing both gives a small range rather than a single magic number. Real healthy weight also depends on muscle mass, frame size, and overall health.
- Are these formulas still used today?
- They remain common quick references in some clinical and fitness contexts, but modern guidelines more often rely on BMI ranges, body composition, and individual health markers rather than a single ideal weight target.
- Does the tool adjust for age or activity?
- No. These are height and sex only models. They do not incorporate age, muscle, or frame. Use them as rough reference points alongside other measures.
- Is the height I enter sent anywhere?
- No. Conversion and arithmetic happen locally. Your input never leaves the page.
