FAQs

Why is liters per 100 km handled differently from the other units?
Miles per gallon and kilometers per liter measure distance per fuel, so higher is better. Liters per 100 km measures fuel per distance, so lower is better and it is the inverse. The converter applies the reciprocal relationship explicitly, which is why a value of zero cannot be converted.
Does this use US gallons or imperial gallons?
It uses US gallons. One US gallon equals 3.785411784 liters. Imperial gallons are larger (about 4.546 liters), so an imperial mpg figure would read higher for the same real efficiency.
How accurate are the conversions?
They use exact definitions: one mile is 1.609344 km and one US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. Results are shown to six significant digits, which is well beyond the precision of any real world fuel reading.
Can I convert a value of zero?
No. Zero fuel economy has no meaningful inverse and would imply infinite consumption, so the tool asks for a value greater than zero.
What is a good fuel economy figure?
It depends on the vehicle, but as a rough guide many modern cars sit around 30 to 45 mpg (US), which is roughly 7.8 to 5.2 L/100km. Lower L/100km and higher mpg both mean better efficiency.
