ROI Calculator

Enter your investment and final value to see the return.

Work out how well an investment performed. Enter what you put in (the initial investment) and what it is worth now (the final value), and this calculator shows your net gain and your ROI as a percent. Add an optional holding period in years to also see the annualized return, which lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time. Everything runs in your browser and works with any currency.

How to use

  1. Enter the initial investment (what the investment cost you).
  2. Enter the final value (what the investment is worth now, or what you sold it for).
  3. Optionally enter the holding period in years to see the annualized return.
  4. Read your net gain, ROI percent, and annualized ROI in the results panel.
  5. Use Copy results to save the figures, or Reset to start over.

Examples

  • Invest 10,000 and it grows to 15,000 over 3 years: net gain 5,000, ROI 50%, annualized ROI about 14.47%.
  • Buy at 2,000 and sell at 1,500: net gain minus 500, ROI minus 25% (a loss).
  • Put in 1,000 and it doubles to 2,000 in 1 year: ROI 100%, annualized ROI 100%.

FAQs

How is ROI calculated?
ROI percent equals (final value minus initial investment) divided by the initial investment, times 100. So turning 10,000 into 15,000 is a 50 percent return.
What is annualized ROI and why does it matter?
Annualized ROI restates your total return as an average per year using compounding: (final value divided by cost) raised to the power of (1 divided by years), minus 1, times 100. It lets you fairly compare investments held for different periods, since a 50 percent return over 3 years is not as strong as 50 percent over 1 year.
Can ROI be negative?
Yes. If the final value is lower than what you invested, the net gain and ROI are negative, which means you made a loss. A total loss (final value of zero) shows as minus 100 percent.
Why do I need to enter a holding period?
The holding period is optional. Without it you still get net gain and ROI percent. Add it only when you want the annualized return for comparing investments over time.
Does this calculator assume a specific currency?
No. It works on the numbers you enter and is currency agnostic, so use rupees, dollars, euros, or any other currency as long as both amounts use the same one.
Does ROI account for fees, taxes, or inflation?
No. This is a simple ROI based purely on cost and final value. For a fuller picture, fold fees and taxes into your final value, and use an inflation calculator to see returns in real terms.
