GST and VAT Calculator

Enter an amount and a tax rate to see the breakdown.

This calculator works out GST or VAT in two directions. Add tax to a net price to see the gross total, or remove tax from a tax inclusive price to see the base amount and the tax portion. Enter your figure, set the rate, pick a mode, and read the breakdown.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount. In add mode this is the price before tax, in remove mode it is the price including tax.
  2. Type the tax rate as a percent, for example 18 for 18 percent.
  3. Choose Add tax or Remove tax from the mode selector.
  4. Read the base amount, the tax amount, and the total in the results panel.

Examples

  • Add 18 percent GST to 1,000: base 1,000, tax 180, total 1,180.
  • Remove 20 percent VAT from 120: base 100, tax 20, total 120.
  • Add 5 percent GST to 250: base 250, tax 12.50, total 262.50.

FAQs

What is the difference between add and remove mode?
Add mode treats your amount as the price before tax and adds the tax on top. Remove mode treats your amount as a tax inclusive price and works backward to find the base and the tax already inside it.
How do I remove GST or VAT from a total?
Pick Remove tax mode and enter the tax inclusive total. The calculator divides it by 1 plus the rate over 100 to find the base, then subtracts to find the tax.
Does it work for any tax rate?
Yes. Enter any non negative percent. Common rates include 5, 12, 18, and 28 for GST, and 20 for VAT, but you can use any value that applies to you.
Is the same formula used for GST and VAT?
Yes. GST and VAT are both percentage taxes on a price, so the add and remove math is identical. Only the rate and the name differ by country.
Are my numbers sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
