  • A 50 bill at 20 percent tip for 1 person gives a 10 tip and a 60 total, all on one share.
  • A 1,200 bill at 15 percent tip split between 6 people gives a 180 tip, a 1,380 total, and 230 each.

FAQs

How is the tip calculated?
The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percent. For example, 18 percent of a 200 bill is 36. The total with tip is the bill plus that tip, and the per person share is the total divided by the number of people.
Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?
This tool tips on whatever bill amount you enter. If you prefer to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal. If you tip on the full bill, enter the total including tax.
What happens if I set the number of people to zero or one?
A split of zero or one is treated as a single share, so the whole total becomes the per person amount. This avoids dividing by zero and still gives you a sensible figure.
Can I use this with any currency?
Yes. The calculator works on the plain numbers you type and never assumes a currency symbol, so it suits any currency. Outputs use thousands separators for readability.
What is a normal tip percent?
It varies by country and service. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is common for table service. In many other places tipping is optional or already included, so check local custom and your bill.
Does it round the per person share?
The displayed figures are formatted to two decimal places, but the math uses the full precision so the shares add back up to the total. Fractional party sizes are rounded down to whole diners.
